Live interview – Breastfeeding and Down Syndrome

To mark Down Syndrome Awareness Month, we’re hosting a special live interview over on the boobingit Instagram page. Our special guest will be Linzi, mama to two-year-old Matilda who has Down Syndrome. Linzi will talk to us about her pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding journey with Matilda – detailing the highs and lows.

What is Down Syndrome?

Down syndrome, or Trisomy 21 as it is often referred to, is a condition in which a child is born with an extra copy of their 21st chromosome. Down syndrome usually causes varying degrees of intellectual and physical disability and associated medical issues.

Every year Down Syndrome Awareness Month runs throughout October, with initiatives, activities, and events to help raise awareness of people with Down Syndrome.

Breastfeeding and Down Syndrome

Many babies born with Down Syndrome have hyptonia (low muscle tone), as well as other health issues, which may mean establishing breastfeeding can be challenging. However, babies with Down syndrome have the ability to breastfeed just like that of a typical baby. Linzi and Matilda are proof of this. During the interview, Linzi will talk about how she persevered and worked hard to get Matilda feeding from the breast.
