Breastfeeding in Colour

In an interview with the boobingit podcast, Kimberly Seals Allers revealed she’ll be publishing her first book in the UK. Entitled, ‘Birthing in Colour’ it will be the black woman’s guide to pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding.

Kimberly Seals Allers is the co-founder of Black Breastfeeding Week, is a world-renowned speaker, five-time author and host of the Birthright Podcast. She also founded the Irth app in 2020 to address racism and bias in maternity and infant care. Kimberly is on a mission to transform the experience of motherhood for all and to eradicate the racial disparities in birth and breastfeeding.

Speaking on the boobingit podcast, Kimberly explained: “Every place where racism plays a role, black women and their babies are being impacted. The book ‘Birthing in Colour: the black woman’s guide to pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding’ will be a way to speak to this issue. It’s a way for me to come in as a journalist, gathering the voices of UK black birth workers, experts and parents themselves, to create an honest conversation about the impact of racism and how it’s impacting birth and breastfeeding patterns.”

Independent publisher Pinter & Martin is to publish Birthing in Colour: The Black Mother’s Guide to Pregnancy, Birth & Breastfeeding by Kimberly Seals Allers in April 2022.

Martin Wagner, Managing Director at Pinter & Martin, acquired world rights from the author. He says: “Birthing in Colour is an inspirational and essential addition to our wide-ranging pregnancy, birth and parenting list, and addresses crucial issues so often neglected in maternity care.”

Announcing the news of her book to her social media fans and followers, Kimberly said: “I look forward to being a vessel for Black birthworkers in the UK. This book is yours— I am just a tool for an overdue conversation on race & to amplify your work.”

Birthing in Colour will be published on 21st April 2022 in paperback, ebook and audio book formats.
