Banksy’s latest mural, unveiled on his Instagram, has ignited thoughtful conversations about breastfeeding and maternal strength.
As one of the world’s most famous and enigmatic street artists, Banksy is renowned for his thought-provoking murals to deliver powerful social and political messages. His latest artwork is his first to upload to social media since August 2024.
Banksy thrilled his fans when he posted his latest work to Instagram on the 16th December. The artwork depicts a mother holding a baby to her chest, in what is reminiscent of traditional depictions of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus. But what first appears as a somewhat serene depiction of mother and child, lies a more harrowing image. Banksy’s image of the mother shows her breast partially exposed with the flesh punctured by what looks like a bullet wound. The ‘wound’ appears to be a water drainage hole on which the mural sits.
As is usual for Banksy – no description or meaning to art has been revealed. We don’t even know the location of the mural as yet. Banksy is choosing to put his art out there for individual interpretation.
Is Banksy’s Mural A Tribute To Breastfeeding?
Many online commentators believe Banksy’s latest mural highlights the act of breastfeeding and the challenges of motherhood. Fans and breastfeeding advocates are praising the mural for its potential to normalise breastfeeding, an act which continues to carry an element of stigma in society.
On Instagram Dr Alice Ashcroft commented: “Love that Banksy is normalising BFing👏😂❤️🙌”. Elsewhere Josh Perrett wrote: “Could this imply a mother’s lifestyle choices impact the milk she feeds to her baby who has no choice but to accept it? Or perhaps that the chemicals in our food go directly from mother to baby through breastfeeding?”
Certainly Banksy’s mural invites viewers to reflect on the role of breastfeeding in society and consider how art can challenge societal taboos. As always, his work merges social commentary with artistry, sparking discussions far beyond the visual image.
