Alot of the responses from breastfeeding mothers on Instagram focused on the need for good breastfeeding support. Many urged new mothers to seek out support early on – and from those who know about breastfeeding and will give proper advice.

“Put breastfeeding support on your baby shower list if you have one” says Patricia Brennan

“Surround yourself with the best people. Makes it so much better.” says boobingit contributor Samantha Taylor

“Get support and shout until you get it. Also trust your body.” says boobingit contributor Lea Howard

“Other mums cheering you on is so important if you don’t have family with experience breastfeeding” says Kathleen Leslie

“Get your advice from credible sources. This isn’t always who you think it would be.” says boobingit contributor Megan Girvan

2. Understand That Breastfeeding Takes Patience

The word ‘patient’ and ‘patience’ cropped up and again and again amongst breastfeeding mothers. This is because breastfeeding can take time to master, so it’s important to be patient and give yourself grace. You and your baby are both learning together. With practice and patience, you will get the hang of it!

“Be gentle, be patient and do your best to be prepared” says Ruth Leemon, IBCLC

“Be patient and kind with yourself. It’s not an easy journey but it’s worth it.” says Christina Penaloza

“Patience – you’re learning a new skill. No one is a ‘natural’, it’s a learned skill for you and your baby!” says Ruth Foster

“It’s all worth the first few weeks of sleep deprivation and sore nipples. It gets easier.” says boobingit contributor Victoria Richardson (pictured above)

3. Feed Your Baby Responsively

There is often this idea that babies should feed on a schedule but our breastfeeding mothers are here to remind you that the most important thing is to feed your baby when they are looking to be fed! This means following your baby’s hunger cues and feeding responsively. Not only will this help with your milk supply but it will also aid bonding too. Some of our mums suggest doing lots of skin-to-skin and having time at home without visitors – to really focus on feeding and bonding with your baby.

“Trust your body and feed on demand for the first 6 weeks with no top-ups” says Annabel Valentine

“Skin to skin is super beneficial and helps baby sense the breast” says boobingit contributor Emily Calam (pictured above)

“Take 2 weeks with no visitors at home that way you can be free and relaxed!” says Paige-Alanis

4. Take It One Feed At A Time

One of the most common pieces of advice from our Instagram community is to focus on one feed at a time. Breastfeeding can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially in the early days, but breaking it down into manageable moments can make a big difference. Each feed is an opportunity to connect with your baby, and taking it step by step helps to ease the pressure and build confidence as you go.

“Don’t quit on a hard day – it’s worth it to keep going” says Gillian Dos Santos Cabrita

“Stick it out as it does get a lot easier and less demanding” says Adele Clark Doolan

“One feed at a time, there will be hurdles but if you want to continue you can” says boobingit contributor Megan Conran-Turner

“If you feel like giving up allow yourself another 24 hours – it always gets better!” says Joy Shepherd

Conclusion
Starting to breastfeed can feel daunting, but with the right advice and support, it can also be a deeply rewarding experience. Thank you to everyone who shared their tips and wisdom—we hope they’ll inspire and empower parents starting their breastfeeding journey in 2025.
