Keeping babies and toddlers safe and cool in hot weather

Keeping babies and toddlers safe in hot weather

Looking after your little ones in the warm summer months can be hard going.

In hot weather, babies and toddlers can be unsettled, uncomfortable, and grouchy! It can be difficult for them to get over to sleep or stay asleep for any length of time. This is why it’s so important to keep them cool and well hydrated, ensuring they are not in direct sunlight and at risk of sun damage or over-heating.

Staying hydrated in the heat

In the heat, breastfed babes will likely want to feed more often and this will help them stay well-hydrated. Exclusively breastfed babies do not need water until they start eating solid food. For older babies and toddlers, make sure they are drinking plenty of water to keep cool and hydrated.

You could even make breast milk popsicles or homemade fruit ice lollies for them to suck on to keep cool.

Safe sleeping in hot weather

When they are taking naps or going to sleep at night you want to make sure they don’t overheat – this is when a nursery thermometer can come in handy. Try to keep rooms as cool as possible by using fans and keeping bedclothes to a minimum.

The Lullaby Trust recommends a room temperature of between 16°C and 20°C for babies, so keep the blinds drawn during the day to keep the sun out.

Keeping cool out and about

If going outside to enjoy the sun with your baby, make sure they’re well covered with suncream (only suitable for babies six months and older), a sunhat and they have adequate cover when in the pram or playing. Babies and toddlers have thinner skin than adults and so it’s important they are well covered and protected from UV rays.

Being in the water can be a great way to cool older babies and toddlers down and, of course, it’s also lots of fun for them to splash about! Always be vigilant when your child is nearby or in water and never leave them unattended.

When travelling by car, keep the car as cool as possible and take regular breaks to lift your little one out of their car seat.
