A mother of two from Texas was left ‘shocked’ and in ‘disbelief’ when a local bakery refused to make celebration cupcakes to mark the end of her breastfeeding journey.
What was supposed to be a special moment in Alexis’ life, has been ruined. Online creator Alexis Kristiana has been breastfeeding her son for three years and has been through lots of ups and downs along the way. For the past year she has been tandem feeding her son and his younger sister.
Marking the end of an emotional breastfeeding journey
Understandably Alexis is extremely proud to have breastfed this long and the weaning process with her son has been extremely emotional. Breastfeeding her son has been such a big part of her motherhood journey so far.
Like to many other breastfeeding mamas, she wanted to mark this important milestone with something special. She thought cupcakes would be something fun and yummy for her and her family to enjoy together.
Latham Bakery said the cupcake order was “inappropriate”
Lots of breastfeeding mothers look to bakeries to make special breastfeeding cakes, cupcakes and cookies – often to celebrate a special breastfeeding milestone or mark the end of a breastfeeding journey. So when Alexis decided she’d love to have some custom cupcakes made for her and her family, she contacted Latham Bakery in Texas about what she wanted. The woman Alexis spoke with on the phone was only too happy to fulfill the order and seemed excited to do so.
Just a short time later Alexis was then surprised by a message she received that effectively cancelled the order. Alexis was told the owner of Latham Bakery thought that making the breastfeeding celebration cupcakes would be “inappropriate”, adding that their audience “can be a bit sensitive”.

Alexis took to Instagram to express her dismay
So shocked was Alexis by the response she took to her popular Instagram page, where she has over 30,000 followers, to express her disbelief and dismay. Explaining her reasoning for wanting the cupcakes, Alexis said in a reel she wanted to “celebrate our journey and honour where we started and what how we ended”.
Alexis goes on to share her disappointment in the bakery refusing to make the cupcakes, questioning how a breastfeeding mother’s journey could be considered “inappropriate”. She further laments how so many mothers face judgement and misunderstanding during their breastfeeding journey.
Widespread disbelief that breastfeeding is still not normalized
In support of Alexis’ negative experience, her followers flooded the comments section to share their shock and dismay. Danielle from @thebreastfeedingmentor commented: “And people say that breastfeeding is normalised? So beyond disappointing 😞”
melis.johnson added: “Wow. Unbelievable. Cannot believe they breastfeeding is still being sexualized in this day and age. Was such a cute idea, it’s the owner’s loss! Congratulations to you mama!! 👏🏼💗”

Alexis won’t let this setback stop her
Alexis is not letting this setback get in the way of her getting her celebration cupcakes made, but this time she’ll be making sure she brings her business to a pro-breastfeeding establishment. She says: “I’m still going to get these made, and I can’t wait to share about how I celebrate the ending of my journey with a bake shop that has a current state of mind, and isn’t living in a different era….”
In support of what Alexis went through @itsmorethanmilk said: “I am so sorry this happened to you, Alexis. What is inappropriate about a mother feeding her baby? I am glad you’re still celebrating this wonderful milestone ❤️.”
